Some people say the classic, everyone-looking-at-the-camera portrait is outdated—but it’s not.

There is always value in a beautiful image where everyone is looking straight at the camera. It shows your faces. Your features. Your family legacy.

You get to see where your children’s features come from—your parents, your grandparents. You get to see each person. That kind of photo matters.

Yes, I love capturing candid moments full of movement and emotion. I believe in variety, and I always include both. But if I can, I will always, always provide that timeless portrait first.

Because it’s the one that gets framed.
The one that generations will hold onto.
The one that will never go out of style. The one that parents and grandparents love.

And everyone who books with me wants that photo—because it’s important. Because it lasts. Because it’s family.

Whenever I have the honor of photographing a large family session, if the opportunity presents itself, my absolute favorite shot to capture is the walking shot. There’s just something about it—so simple, yet so deeply meaningful.

Here in Central Oregon, many families come together for a rare vacation or reunion, and I know firsthand how hard it is these days to get everyone in the same place. That walking moment—everyone side by side, talking, laughing, maybe wrangling a toddler or two—feels like such a beautiful reflection of togetherness. It’s not posed or polished, but it’s real—and full of joy.

I think I treasure these moments so much because I know how fleeting they are. My own favorite family photo, one I have blown up large in my home, is a walking shot from about six and a half years ago. It means the world to me—because life moves fast, and getting us all together again like that hasn’t happened since.

So if I can give another family that same feeling, that same memory to hold onto—I always try to. Because sometimes the simplest images are the ones that hold the most heart.
